In 1 Corinthians 5–7, Paul continues to give advice to the Corinthian saints and addresses important issues such as: What kind of association should saints have with sinners? When is it right for saints to take one another to legal disputes? Why is it better for marriage to take place after a mission? Seek Paul's advice on these matters and consider what they have to do with you.
Understanding the Scriptures
1 Corinthians 5

Fornication (vs. 1)—Sexual relations between unmarried people.

A little leaven leavens the whole lump (vs. 6)—A little leaven leavens and increases the thickness of the whole lump; a little sin affects the whole person or the whole congregation.

Purify yourselves (vs. 7)—Purify yourselves, repent of them.

Malice (vs. 8)—Desires to harm others.

1 Corinthians 5:5—“Let such a one be delivered over to Satan”

Members with more knowledge and experience in the Church are subject to more serious punishments. “Let such a one be delivered over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh” (1 Corinthians 5:5) is tantamount to separating people from the blessings of the Gospel; it also entails the loss of the Holy Spirit, which leaves them without God’s healing and protective power. In this state, people are left alone to endure the full destructive power of the adversary.

1 Corinthians 6

Going to court (vv. 1, 6–7)—To bring charges against someone, to sue someone for something.

A fault (v. 7)—A very serious breach.

Defrauded (v. 7)—Deceived.

Neither effeminate nor homosexuals (v. 9)—Those who participate in various sins of homosexuality.

1 Corinthians 6:9–12—Did Paul consider these mortal sins lawful?

The Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible provides an important change to 1 Corinthians 6:12, explaining that Paul said that all these things were not lawful for him, and that all these things were not expedient (see JST, 1 Corinthians 6:12; italics added).
