By validating real interactions between services, integration testing uncovers problems such as contract mismatches, incorrect data handling, and communication failures early in the development cycle. It plays a critical role in CI pipelines by providing confidence that new changes won’t break existing integrations.

Effective Integration testing requires balancing realism and reliability. Tests should cover critical service interactions while remaining fast and deterministic enough to run consistently. Over-reliance on live dependencies can introduce flakiness, while excessive mocking may hide real issues.

When implemented thoughtfully alongside unit and end-to-end testing, integration testing strengthens system stability, reduces production defects, and helps teams ship changes with greater confidence.
