A large blaze erupted at the boutique hotel "Ainavas" at 23 Peldu Street in Riga's Old Town early this morning, Solveiga Smiltene, Press Secretary at the State Fire and Rescue Service, told LETA.
The building's roof was on fire in a total area of 150 square meters. 11 people were evacuated from the building, there were no casualties.
The Fire and Rescue Service was reported the fire at 4:52 a.m., it was brought under control at 5:59 a.m.
More than a dozen fire trucks participated in the job.
Two versions are being mentioned as the cause - an overheated fireplace and chimney, or a short circuit in the attic.
The first version was also partly confirmed by the hotel's staffers, but the actual reason will be eventually determined by the Fire and Rescue Service and police investigators.
According to Smiltene, firefighters encountered several problems in putting out the fire. The hotel attic's door could not be opened initially, and there were also problems with water supply - an automobile was parked on the nearest fire-plug.
Four hotel's tenants - foreigners - have been placed in other hotels, Smiltene said.
According to the latest information, the fire is now out, LETA observed, even though this has not been officially confirmed yet.
The building's roof has been damaged. Besides, water used to douse the flames on the roof has flooded all four floors of the building.
