Repairing several bridges at once is not reasonable - premier

Repairing several Riga bridges at once is not reasonable, Prime Minister and ex-Mayor of Riga, Andris Berzins, said in an interview on the Latvian State Radio today.

According to the premier, the Riga City Council is now repairing access ramps of the bridges, the bridges themselves have been repaired several years ago.

"At that time, we repaired one bridge at a time. Now several bridges at once are repaired, and this, I believe, is not reasonable," Berzins said.

Because of the renovation of the Vansu (Suspension) Bridge, which began on May 6, only public transportation, police automobiles, ambulances and taxies will be allowed to use the bridge between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. heading from the downtown Riga to Pardaugava.

Other vehicles have to use either Akmens (Stone) Bridge or Salu (Island) Bridge. All vehicles can use Vansu Bridge between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Up until June 30, only two out of three Vansu Bridge's lanes in the direction of downtown Riga are in operation.

Salu Bridge's ramps are also under repair.
