A two-story wooden house burnt down at 103 Miera Street in Riga yesterday, leaving 14 people homeless.
The building belongs to a foreign citizen, as well as a building at 101 Miera Street where two major blazes were registered this fall in which three people perished, the State Fire and Rescue Service's press secretary Solveiga Smiltene told LETA.
The house manager learned about the overnight incident from firefighters.
The Fire and Rescue Service received the first call shortly after midnight yesterday. The entire building was on fire.
Nine fire trucks and a crane participated in dousing the fire. 14 people were evacuated from the building.
The fire was brought under control already an hour later. The blaze was put out at 7:30 a.m., Smiltene said.
Experts inspected the building after that to determine the reason for the fire. It is said that the fire must have broken out at the staircase between the first and second floor.
An area of 60 square meters on the first floor, 100 square meters on the second floor and 300 square meters in the attic have burnt out.
Eight tenants are now in the hotel "Balta kaza", others have moved to their relatives.
Experts currently suspect arson, Smiltene told LETA. The police will determine all circumstances.
The Fire and Rescue Service's experts concluded that arson was not the motive behind two blazes in the building at 101 Miera Street at the beginning of September. Therefore, the police did not open a criminal case.
During a blaze in the building at 101 Miera Street on September 8, two people perished and five sustained injuries. One person died in a fire in the building on September 4.
