An additional probe on the impact of the planned cellulose plant on the environment must be carried out as part of implementation of the "Baltic Pulp" project, the newspaper "Dienas Bizness" (DB) reports.
Janis Avotins, the director at the State Bureau of Evaluation of Environment Pollution, confirmed this information to DB. Constructors are to conduct additional research and redefine their position on several matters.
Such a request could possibly hamper construction of the cellulose plant in Latvia. Previously, the Finnish company "Metsaliitto Group", the potential investor in the "Baltic Pulp" cellulose plant, forecast that construction work could be launched in the first quarter of 2004.
Avotins explained the need to conduct an additional probe as a result of the criticism and objections against the project from a task force set up by the Riga City Council, Environmental Protection Club and experts from other organizations.
Taking into account the opinions of the experts, Avotins had requested the European association of cellulose producers to propose foreign experts (except from Scandinavia). Currently, an evaluation is awaited from a Portuguese company on the selection of technology for the cellulose plant.
