An open public discussion on construction of a cellulose and paper plant on the western Kurzeme coast is scheduled for the Riga's Congress Center at 10 a.m. tomorrow, June 13, LETA was informed by Riga City Council Information and PR Department.
Economic and ecological aspects of the concept will be reviewed at the event.
Within the concept, alternative facilities in Kurzeme will be offered instead of the planned joint-stock "Baltic Pulp" cellulose plant in Ozolsala. An independent experts' group set up by the Riga City Council and the Latvian Academy of Sciences concluded that as a result of operations at the planned "Baltic Pulp" plant, quality of water in the Daugava River would deteriorate, and it would be impossible to purify it so that it could be consumed as potable water.
The public discussion has been organized by the Riga City Council, Environment Ministry, Latvian Academy of Science, NGO "Zala zeme" (Green Land) and the Association of Private Forest Owners.
A press conference is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. tomorrow.
