The Kipsala Exhibition Center can be fully prepared and reconstructed for hosting "Eurovision" song contest rehearsals by the Latvian State Television (LTV) already on April 24, one month ahead of the contest's finals, which is one of the major pros for selecting Kipsala as the contest's venue, Viesturs Tile, director of the exhibition company "BT 1", said today upon presenting Kipsala Exhibition Center's bid.
Sandra Biseniece, "BT 1" coordinator for the "Eurovision" project, said her company could name five "pros" why the contest should take place in Kipsala.
First, "BT 1" has a major experience of organizing such events, second, Kipsala is situated in a good place and has the required space, third is infrastructure, four - the matter of access roads has been solved, five - good acoustics and adequate security measures, Bisenieice said.
Kipsala is in direct vicinity of downtown Riga, the airport and hotels can be reached without any problems, "BT 1" representatives emphasized during the presentation.
As for infrastructure, the center's indoor area is 70,000 square meters, the center's architect Uldis Berzins has prepared a project on reconstruction of the center and placing 6,500 seats there, "BT 1" said.
Vilnis Valbergs, who is in charge of security, stressed that the "Eurovision" song contest would witness "unprecedented security measures commensurate with those during Clinton's visit". Each spectator will be checked by metal detectors.
It is currently planned that spectators will not be able to park their automobiles at the center, parking lots will only be meant for artists, VIP and technical crews, taxis, public transportation, police, ambulance, fire trucks.
The venue for hosting the "Eurovsion" contest must be selected by August 1. All bids are evaluated by LTV and government's task force. The ultimate decision will be adopted in conjunction with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
LTV's "Eurovision" task force has said previously that bids submitted by the "Skonto" Olympic Center and Kipsala Exhibition Center are equal. Both are professional, costs are also similar, and selecting one will be a tough choice.
The "Eurovision" song contest's finals will take place on May 24, 2003.
