According to Khristenko, the 50-million-ton capacity was reached three days ago. The goal is to raise the figure to 62 million tons a year, he said.
The pipeline system is used to transport oil from Timan-Pechora and Western Siberia to Primorsk port in Leningrad Region.
The first round of construction of the pipeline system was completed in December 2001, it cost USD 460.2 million, the system could transport 12 million tons of oil annually then.
After the system started operating in 2002, Russian crude oil transit via Ventspils port fell twofold, to 7.5 million tons, no crude has been supplied to Ventspils through the pipeline since 2003.
