The Bauska City Council plans on providing assistance to the fire-destroyed Bauska Market's owner Ainars Tiesnesis and people who worked at the market, Bauska Mayor Arija Gaile told LETA.
As reported, the Bauska Market was destroyed in fire on Saturday night.
Gaile held a meeting with Tiesnesis on Sunday to discuss what assistance he needed, another meeting will be held later today. The Bauska City Council will most likely help Tiesnesis by providing machinery to clean up the scene.
The city council is concerned the most about more than 50 Bauska residents who used to work at the market as self-employed and now are jobless, Gaile said. The city council's social service will be contacting these people during this week, the city council will grant them one-off benefits.
Tiesnesis wants to restore the market, Gaile said. There is one more market in Bauska, Bauze Market, therefore farmers who used to sell their products at the Bauska Market could move to the Bauze Market.
Firefighters were reported the fire at 11 Rupniecibas Street in Bauska at 1:40 a.m. on January 18. The market's pavilion, 700 square meters, was on fire. Firefighters managed to put out the fire at only about 7 a.m.
"The market has burnt to the ground", the market's owner Aivars Tiesnesis, former Saeima member, told LETA.
According to Tiesnesis, the market was partly insured, the losses are expected to be huge, besides, many people will lose jobs now. The fire-caused losses have to be assessed yet; according to initial information, Tiesnesis has lost about LVL 50,000. The fire also caused losses for retailers who had goods stored in the pavilion.
The fire was most likely caused by an electric appliance, Tiesnesis said. Arson is not suspected, he added.
Bauska Police are working to establish the cause of the fire, launching a criminal case will be considered in the near future, Bauska Police Chief Juris Kovalonoks said.
According to Tiesnesis, his market was the biggest market in Bauska.
