Damage that Cesvaine Castle has suffered in this morning's fire is estimated at about LVL 2 million, several officials told LETA at the scene.
Cesvaine Mayor Vilnis Spats said that restoration of the castle's roof would alone claim LVL 0.5 million. Therefore, the total loss is hard to tell right now.
The Cesvaine Castle, located in Vidzeme's Madona District, is under the auspices of the local government, however, it is also a building of national importance.
As reported, the Finance Ministry has pledged to find options to back the restoration of castle.
State Minister for Regional Development and Local Government Affairs Ivars Gaters will propose that the government urgently review measures to assist the Cesvaine City Council.
Spats will compile data on the required assistance for continued operations of Cesvaine High School, Gaters told LETA. He could not, however, tell of any specific amounts of money that would be required.
According to Gaters, resuming classes is a priority now, assistance in restoration of the castle would be the first thing to consider.
The State Cultural Monument Protection Inspection will also assist in the restoration of Cesvaine Castle as much as possible, the inspection's head Juris Dambis told LETA.
The Cultural Monument Protection Inspection will definitely turn to the government, asking that money be allotted for restoration of the castle. According to Dambis, the inspection itself will hardly be able to provide the required funds because almost all of the money allotted for the program for preservation and research of cultural monuments this year has already been used up.
It is important to find out the actual reason for the blaze and who is responsible for it, Dambis stressed. The inspection will do everything in its power to preserve the castle, he also said.
The program for preservation and research of cultural monument receives LVL 250,000 to LVL 300,000 a year for renovation of all monuments and historical buildings in Latvia, which is only about one-tenth of financing that is actually needed. Already now, money is required for restoration of castles in Bauska and Turaida.
According to the Cultural Monument Protection Inspection's deputy head Janis Asaris, an interim roof should be put on the building first of all, in order to prevent a further decline in the castle's condition.
The Association of Latvian Castles and the Cesvaine City Council are calling on residents and organizations to help in raising funds for restoration of the castle. Donations can be transferred to the association or local government's accounts in "Latvijas Unibanka" or "Baltijas Tranzitu banka".
