A delegation from the Chinese telecommunications equipment company "Huawei Technologies" has been visiting Latvia this week. A meeting with officials from the Ministry of Transport is on the agenda of the visit, LETA was told by the ministry's deputy state secretary Guntis Macs.
The company has great interest in launching operations in the Baltic states. "Huawei Technologies" could select Latvia as a starting point in the region.
According to Macs, the company could deal with production and trade in Latvia, providing new job vacancies, new technologies and lower prices. The company also has been dealing with CDMA and UMTS technologies.
Macs called the visit to Latvia a pilot trip.
In April, Minister of Transport Ainars Slesers is planning to visit China. He told reporters earlier that such a visit would "pay off for Latvia with interest." The minister believes that China would never show interest in Latvia and extend an invitation to visit if cooperation were unfavorable.
The joint stock "Telekom Baltija", operating in Latvia under the "Triatel" brand, could purchase "Huawei Technologies" equipment to set up mobile communications network.
"Huawei Technologies" was founded in 1988, its revenues last year totaled USD 5.58 billion (about LVL 2.9 billion), which is 45 percent up from last year.
