Prime Minister Einars Repse has received information about a bribe of 5 percent of the value of an agreement on construction of the new "Latvia Post" mail sorting complex, which was to ensure that the matter not be reviewed by the government.
According to Repse, the bribe was demanded by people associated with the "political arena", and meant to make sure that the government did not review the results of the tender and the agreement would go through.
Repse has forwarded the report to law enforcement authorities, Repse told the Cabinet meeting today. "Unidentified persons" demanded a bribe of 5 percent of the amount of the contract "on behalf of an unidentified person".
Initially, the contract's amount was over LVL 10 million, the costs were later slashed to little over LVL 8 million. This suggests that the bribe was between LVL 400,000 and LVL 500,000.
The government plans to support the Transport Ministry's proposal to terminate the contract on the construction of the sorting complex and evaluate the role of "Latvia Post" executives.
The tender on construction of the sorting complex was won by "NIA Ltd.". Architect offices "Sarma & Norde" later reviewed the complex's technical project, slashing the construction costs from LVL 10.58 million to LVL 8.06 million. Adding unforeseen expenditures of 5 percent, the project's total costs could therefore amount to LVL 8.46 million.
