Construction of the "Stockmann" shopping mall in downtown Riga [between the train and bus stations] is another wrong move that will deform the downtown area, which is considered a part of the world's cultural heritage, believes the Latvian Architects Union.
The union's chairman Juris Poga told LETA that the union would officially notify Prime Minister Einars Repse and Riga Mayor Gundars Bojars about its stance.
The Architects Union believes that the among the reasons for the error are the process in Riga development planning, which is still disorganized, and disregard for Riga's current development strategy.
In order to prevent such wrong moves in the future, the Architects Union's board points out that any construction activities must comply with Latvia's laws and the procedures set by regulations on construction and others. The entire community will suffer as a result of unprofessional solutions to such matters.
If construction matters are not put in order immediately, the Architects Union will consider solving the problems through courts of law.
