Construction output in Latvia grew 10.8% last year
According to the Central Statistical Bureau, construction output in 2002 totaled LVL 469.3 million, an increase of 10.8 percent compared with 2001.

In 2002 the value of construction work performed outside Latvia was LVL 2.4 million. The bulk of construction work worth LVL 1 million was accounted for by the C.I.S. countries followed by the countries of the European Union with LVL 0.9 million.
Over the same period the value of construction work done by non-resident construction contractors in the Latvia totaled LVL 5.8 million. Lithuanian and Estonian builders have been quite active, accounting for LVL 1 million and LVL 0.5 million, respectively.
Compared with 2001, the value of new construction in 2002 increased 33.5 percent or LVL 48.5 million. By contrast, the value of repair and reconstruction works decreased 1 percent or LVL 2.8 million. New construction in 2002 represented 41.2 percent of the total value of construction output.
Compared with 2001, the value of new construction and repairs of the main pipelines, communication and power lines increased 1.5 times, and that of the construction of retail and wholesale trade buildings and residential houses rose 1.4 and 1.3 times, respectively. At the same time, the value of construction of ports and dams decreased 74 percent and that of hotels and similar type of buildings - 33 percent.
Last year, apartment buildings with a total space of 187,600 square meters were commissioned, 0.5 percent down on 2001.
Most construction activities are still concentrated in Riga (55.7 percent), Ventspils (6.9 percent) and Liepaja (5 percent). At the same time construction output in some districts (districts of Ventspils, Balvi, Dobele, Ludza, Gulbene and others) has been insignificant.
New orders for construction in the amount of LVL 789.7 million were placed in 2002, including LVL 428.8 million for residential construction and LVL 360.9 million for civil engineering.
