Construction output up 13 % in H1
In the first half of 2003, the construction output totaled LVL 194.3 million in Latvia, an increase of 13 percent compared with the first half of 2002, according to the Central Statistical Bureau.

The value of construction output in the 2nd quarter was LVL 119.8 million, up by 10.3 percent on the second quarter of the previous year.
In the first half of this year the value of construction work done outside Latvia was LVL 4.6 million. The major part of construction work was done in the CIS countries and the countries of the European Union (EU), LVL 1.6 million and LVL 0.5 million, respectively. The Lithuanian constructors had been quite active with construction output worth LVL 0.6 million.
Compared with the first half of 2002, the value of new construction increased by 10.3 percent or LVL 7.2 million and the value of repair and reconstruction works rose by 14.9 percent and LVL 15.2 million, respectively.
New construction in the first half of 2003 represented 39.7 percent of the total value of construction output.
Compared with the first half of 2002, there were increases in the value of new construction and repairs by factor of 1.6 for retail and wholesale trade buildings, motorways, streets and roads and residential buildings and by factor of 1.5 for administrative buildings. Over the same period the value of construction of education buildings decreased by 40 percent, the value of construction of bridges fell by 33 percent and that of local pipelines and power cables decreased by 10 percent.
In the 1st quarter this year private residential buildings with a total space of 39,900 square meters were commissioned. In the 2nd quarter private residential buildings with a total space 38,400 square meters were commissioned.
In the first half of 2003 many important objects for the national economy were commissioned, for example, the trading center "Origo" in Riga, "VP Market's" shop "Hyper Maxima", the business and recreational center "Triangula bastions", a new exports warehouse complex for the joint-stock "Latvijas Balzams". Also were commissioned a new border checkpoint in Kaplava County in Kraslava District, an ice arena in Pinki, Riga District, a new railway bypass in Ventspils and a new facility of electronic goods in Ogre.
