The Riga City Council's City Development Committee today backed raising a monument to former president Karlis Ulmanis near the intersection of Valdemara Street and Raina Boulevard.
The committee backed sculptor Uldis Kurzemnieks' design project, the Riga City Council's Information and Public Relations Department told LETA. The Riga City Council now must pass the final decision.
The Riga City Council's Monument Council backed Kurzemnieks' design of the monument on November 14. The monument is to be unveiled on July 22 next year.
The monument was designed by Kurzemnieks and architect Agnis Luksevics. The monument depicts Ulmanis, first of all, "as a man who is coming forward and greeting us". Kurzemnieks told LETA earlier. According to Kurzemnieks, the monument has changed very much since he began working on it, and that is normal, because Kurzemnieks has been reading much about Ulmanis since then.
According to Kurzemnieks, the image of Ulmanis has become simpler, clearer and more democratic. "The monument has been designed so that it does not overwhelm people with its size, so that there is no ambitiousness about the monument, but there has to be a feeling that the monument is like an affable person," Kurzemnieks said.
The monument is to be 2.55 meters tall, and over three meters tall together with the pedestal. There will also be a small square around the monument. According to Kurzmnieks, the monument will not change the character of the park it will be located at.
It is planned that both the sculpture and the pedestal will be made of bronze.
