Emsis had every possibility to look over canal reconstruction project, says Riga Environmental Department's spokesman
The project on the second stage of reconstruction of the Riga Canal could have been inspected by any person at the Riga City Council^apostrofs;s Environmental Department since 1999 when it was worked out, which is why the statement by city councilman Indulis Emsis, the leader of the Green Party of Latvia, that he could not become acquainted with the project, is untrue, LETA was told by Edvins Freidenfelds from the Environmental Department^apostrofs;s Informative Support Unit.

Freidenfelds told LETA that Emsis' statements and commotion he has caused about the reconstruction of the canal and the felling of trees along its banks is a skillfully organized campaign of the Greens, that also misrepresents facts.
Freidenfelds said that the Greens only mention figures in their statements on how many trees are to be cut, they, however, ignore the fact that according to the project, twice as many trees are to be planted. The project stipulates that 113 trees will be chopped down during the reconstruction of the canal, while 214 are to be planted, including 146 deciduous and 68 coniferous trees.
As reported, Emsis said yesterday that he has not had the opportunity to receive more detailed information about the reconstruction project since he was not given access to the project by the Environmental Department.
Emsis called on Riga chief gardener Juris Liepa to acquaint him with the work done during the second stage of reconstruction of the canal, including felling of trees, and the project on the second stage of reconstruction.
