A criminal case has been launched according to the Criminal Law's Section 146, Part 2 - violation of occupational protection provisions resulting in death or serious bodily injury to several persons.
The applicable sentence is deprivation of liberty for a period not exceeding eight years, with or without deprivation of the right to engage in specific employment for a period not exceeding five years.
The police have spoken with the owners of "Birgita", but they have not provided any explanation yet, Zvidre said.
The police have determined that one of the deceased, a worker at the gas tank exchange center, was Modris M. (born 1971). The other four deceased and six hospitalized persons were farmers, mostly from Bauska and Limbazi districts.
According to Zvidre, this is tragic accident that could be compared with a fire at the matches producer "Kometa" on December 14, 2001, where nine people died. Investigation of a criminal case on the fire at "Kometa" is still continuing but there are no suspects in the case.
According to the Registry of Enterprises' "Lursoft" database, the owners of "Birgita" include several individuals - the company's director Brigita Kuntsberga, her deputy Artases Babajans, chief accountant Ludmila Selkovska.
Public Services Regulatory Commission issued "Birgita" a license for distribution of liquefied fuel on April 9, 2003. The company had also received such a license in 1998 from the Energy Supply Regulatory Council.
The company's current license expires on April 8, 2008, it authorizes the company's operations in Riga.
The Public Services Regulatory Commission's license for "Birgita" included a number of conditions the company had to observe. The company could distribute liquefied gas according to the Energy Law, Cabinet of Ministers' regulations on gas supply and use, international agreements, other bills, standards and decisions of the regulator.
As reported, an explosion destroyed the gas tank exchange center at 10a Maskavas Street at 10 p.m. yesterday. Five people died at the scene, six were hospitalized, suffering from various injuries. Another six suffered minor injuries and refused hospitalization.
