Finance ministry applies for compensation from EU Solidarity Fund
Ministry of Finance today forwarded information on the January storm-caused losses in Latvia to the European Commission Directorate General for Regional Policy, applying for compensation from the European Union (EU) Solidarity Fund.

Ministry of Finance Press Secretary Baiba Melnace informed LETA that the total storm-caused damage to the Latvian economy is estimated at EUR 190.75 million (LVL 134.06 million), including EUR 104.3 million (LVL 73.3 million) damage in the private sector and EUR 86.45 million (LVL 60.76 million) - in the public sector. In the public sector, the government's losses stand at EUR 63.75 million (LVL 44.8 million), and local governments' losses - at EUR 22.7 million (LVL 15.95 million).
Forests have sustained the biggest damage of EUR 81.2 million (LVL 57.07 million), transport sector - EUR 12.7 million (LVL 8.93 million), agricultural sector - EUR 11.6 million (LVL 8.15 million), coastal areas - EUR 10.7 million (LVL 7.52 million), coastal facilities - EUR 5.1 million (LVL 3.58 million), power sector - EUR 4.8 million (LVL 3.37 million), the damage to buildings totaled EUR 4.69 million (LVL 3.3 million).
Latvia expects a reply from the EU institutions in the coming months.
