In three months, the Finnish company "JHC Arena Holding Oy Ltd." will be working on the multifunctional sports arena's concept for "Multihalle Ltd.", the company's head Harri Harkimo told journalists today.
The Finnish company will have to study how the large building will need to be built according to Latvia's specifics, what the financing strategy could be, the facility's name and management principles.
According to "Multihalle's" board chairman Ojars Kehris, the first stage will cost the company about USD 100,000. Kehris said that the Finnish partner could also participate in the financing and implementation of the project, and also management of the arena.
Currently, the former location of Riga's horse race track at the intersection of Skanstes Street and Grostonas Street is being considered as a possible site,, Kehris said.
According to Vilnis Strams, acting director of the Riga City Council's City Development Department, a part of this territory has been set aside for "Futbola un basketbola centrs Ltd." (Soccer and Basketball Center), the Riga City Council is currently waiting for "Multihalle", whether and when it will convince the owners of the Soccer and Basketball Center that the land plot needs to be rented out to "Multihalle".
"Multihalle" and the Finnish company reps stressed that Riga needs such a sports facility. Kehris said that "Rigans have deserved to have such an arena not tomorrow but today, if not yesterday".
"Multihalle" hopes that the 2006 world ice hockey championships in Riga will take place in the new building, which should be finished by that time.
"Multihalle" was founded by Kehris, who owns 31 percent interest in the company, worth LVL 19,747 nominal value, Ivars Kalviskis (20 percent, LVL 12,740), Guntis Indriksons (20 percent) and Kirovs Lipmans (29 percent, LVL 18,473).
