The State Fire and Rescue Service suspects two causes of the weekend's fire in a multi-story building at 19 Brivibas Street yesterday.
Firefighters believe that the fire was caused by negligence or arson, Juris Lakatins, the head of the Fire and Rescue Service's Riga branch, told LETA.
Experts have gathered samples of flammable objects at the scene of the fire, which will help determine the cause, Lakatins said.
The blaze had raged on the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors and the attic of the building, the State Police's Press and Public Relations Department told LETA.
Two firefighters, who suffered injuries while putting out the fire, have already been discharged from the hospital, Lakatins also said.
Dousing the flames took firefighters 12 hours yesterday, the fire was put out at only about 6 p.m. The building, across the street from the Freedom Monument, houses an "Elkor" fashion clothing store and a post office.
According to "Latvia Post", the water used to put out the fire has completely paralyzed the operations of post office #51. Entering there is dangerous because the walls and the ceiling could cave in.
"Latvia Post" acting director general Ginta Skodova held an emergency meeting of the company's leaders yesterday to decide on measures to liquidate the damage.
