Former prime minister Paavo Lipponen will work as a consultant to Nord Stream. Lipponen has made a year long agreement with the company, says "Helsingin Sanomat".

His role will be to speed up the construction of Nord Stream's gas pipeline, and will include facilitation of the environmental licence processing, as well as sustaining good relations with Finnish politicians.

Lipponen has already stated his support for the gas pipeline project during his time as the prime minister. He emphasises the importance of the pipeline as a collaborative EU - Russia project and does not support the view whereby it should be linked to the issues of the wood duties or the Baltic Sea protection.

The pipeline should, in his opinion, be seen only as an environmental issue, and even then, one to be considered within reasonable limits. Lipponen was asked to join the project by the former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and Nord Stream's CEO Matthias Warning.

The pipeline, which Nord Stream is planning to lay down in 2010, has caused a wave of objections, primarily due to environmental concerns. The EU parliament has demanded an environmental impact assessment. In case the assessment is negative, the parliament will not allow the pipe to be realized within the suggested scope.
