The Cabinet of Ministers agreed in principle today to back organization of the 2006 World Ice Hockey Championships in Riga.
Vilnis Baltins, the executive director at "Multihalle Ltd.", that won the right to build an ice hockey arena in Riga, told LETA before the government's meeting yet that the organizers of the event wanted to receive all support possible which concerned both the organization of the championships and construction of the arena.
The government decided today that it would agree in one week what support and in what specific sectors would be offered.
According to documents, the organizers of the championships want for the Ministry of Education and Science to draw up a Cabinet decree by June 9 on handing over the state-owned buildings and facilities at 6 Grostonas Street in Riga to the City of Riga without any compensation. Said buildings and facilities will then be torn down in order to clear the area for construction of the hockey arena.
The organizers of the championships want the law on the 2003 national budget for 2003 amended, and that the Education and Science Ministry draw up a program on support for the work of the 2006 World Ice Hockey Championships' board. The organizers want for the state to allot LVL 75,000 for launching the work of the championships' board, and propose that the money be allotted within the Finance Ministry's program on emergency funds.
The championships' organizers also want the Finance Ministry to draw up bills by June 9 permitting enterprises registered in Latvia to enjoy corporate tax breaks if they acquire the arena's name and buy seats in the arena. Besides, it is recommended that the ministry draw up bills that authorize exempting supply of goods and services, required in construction of the arena, from value-added tax.
The organizers of the championships also ask that the Education and Science Ministry's land plot of 5,995 square meters and a building at Sporta Street 13/15 in Riga be turned over to "Multihalle" for modernizing the territory. A respective agreement is to be signed by June 9.
On October 2001, Latvia and the International Ice Hockey Federation signed an agreement on organization of the 2006 World Ice Hockey Championships in Riga.
The Latvian Ice Hockey Federation, the 2006 World Ice Hockey Championships board and "Multihalle" have confirmed they are ready to launch construction of the ice hockey arena required for organizing the championships and ensure that the championships be successful, provided that they receive required backing from the state.
The new arena's foundation stone is to be laid tomorrow.
