Government approves new ceiling on apartment rental fees
The Cabinet of Ministers today passed amendments to the law on apartment rental fees. The amendments stipulate setting a new ceiling on apartment rental fees - LVL 0.60 per square meter in 2005, and LVL 0.72 in 2006. Until the end of this year, the ceiling on apartment rental fees will remain LVL 0.48 per square meter.

According to the amendments, drawn up by the Ministry of Regional Development and Local Government Affairs, maximum ceiling on apartment rental fees will be applied to tenants in denationalized apartment houses who have signed rent agreements before December 31, 2001.
According to a survey conducted by the Central Statistical Bureau at end-2003, 40,270 apartments are rented in denationalized houses - 51 percent of all apartments in denationalized houses. Tenants in 29,084 such apartments lived there before denationalization.
These tenants make 3 percent of Latvia's population. In Riga, 27,302 apartments are rented in denationalized houses, including 20,295 apartments in which tenants lived before the houses were denationalized. It means that 69.8 percent of all apartments in denationalized houses in which tenants lived before denationalization are located in Riga, according to the ministry's data.
