Greens to attempt to block construction in Old Town square

Environmental Protection Club activists today are scheduled to discuss with Riga councilmen the possibility of hampering construction work on the square between Kaleju, Ridzenes and 13.janvara streets in Old Town Riga, LETA was informed by the club.
The Environmental Protection Club reminds that a signature drive against construction on the square was held and 10,675 signatures were gathered. The list of signatures was handed in to the State Cultural Monument Protection Administration.
In 2002, another poll of residents was staged during which time 4,000 people has expressed their objections.
Following the public pressure, a construction moratorium was set for construction in Old Town on April 30, 2002.
Today, the Riga City Council is deciding on amending restrictions for construction in the historic center of Riga concerning the planned shopping center on Kaleju Street.
A number of well-known intellectuals are calling on the Riga City Council not to permit a lifting of construction restrictions in the historic center of Riga in the interests of certain investors.
A survey, carried out by the University of Latvia sociologists last year on preservation and development of Riga's historic center shows that 92 percent of the polled objected to the construction of the shopping center in the historic center of Riga.
The call of Greens has been backed by the chairman of Latvia's Architects Union Juris Poga, architects Andris Cinis, Gundega Linare, Ausma Skujina, Peteris Blums, Andris Biedrins, Olita Ziemele, Saeimas deputy Leopolds Ozolins and Arvids Ulme, folklorists Helmi Stalte, Julgi Stalte, artists Aija Zarina, Mara Lace, Gundega Cebere, Alda Ozola, Pauls Jaunzems, Sandris Murins, Maija Tenase, Dace Bekere, Inara Randere, Aldis Auzins, Brigita Laime, Didzis Tjarve, Zaiga Putrama, Iveta Laure, Greens activist Elita Kalnina and others.
