Minister of Culture Helena Demakova (People's Party) believes that the Kometforts and Daugavgriva fortifications' status of historic monuments cannot be contested, minister's press secretary Gunda Ignatane told LETA.
"Business and city development plans must be balanced with our cultural and historic heritage. The port's development must not continue at the expense of historic monuments," said Demakova.
At the same time, the minister emphasizes that a constructive dialog between the Freeport of Riga Authority and the State Cultural Monument Protection Inspection is necessary.
Ministry of Culture is responsible for preserving cultural values, and the minister relies on professionals' decision that Kometforts and Daugavgriva fortifications should retain the status of historic monuments.
The State Cultural Monument Protection Inspection has decided to consider again whether the Kometforts and Daugavgriva fortifications conform with the status of historic monument, after the inspection was reproached with bias during a meeting of government, Riga City Council and the port's officials last week to discuss further development of the Freeport of Riga.
The inspection has set up a task force that will have to prove the cultural and historic importance of the fortifications and that they conform with the status of historic monument.
On February 25, 2003, then-Minister of Culture Inguna Ribena (New Era) signed a decree on inclusion of the Kometforts and Daugavgriva fortifications on the list of state historic monuments.
