(MBS) and "Multihalle Ltd.", that won a tender on construction of a multi-functional ice hockey arena for the 2006 ice hockey world championships in Riga, at the end of the week, the federation's president Kirovs Lipmans told LETA.
According to Lipmans, the contract is being discussed by both companies and the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation this week, it is likely that the discussions will take the entire week.
The contract between the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation and the companies was to be signed by October 1, so that construction of the ice hockey arena begins on time, and the complex's cornerstone can be laid no later than May 1, 2003.
Since signing of the contract is delayed, Lipmans is being regularly telephoned by leaders of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), and can only pledge each time that the contract will be signed soon.
As reported, IIHF declared that it would supervise Latvia's readiness to host the championship more closely. IIHF Secretary General Jan-Ake Edvinsson intends to visit Riga in order to become acquainted with the contract first hand after it is signed.
If Latvia fails to carry out the above conditions and the organization of the 2006 championship in Riga becomes doubtful, Russia could possibly organize it as it had shown interest in such a possibility.
