The joint-stock gas company "Latvijas gaze" (LG) has submitted the Public Services Regulatory Commission a new petition specifying tariffs for sale of natural gas, which envisages raising the tariffs as of July 1 of this year, LG press secretary Vinsents Makaris told LETA.
According to the new petition, monthly bills for customers who use gas for heating and consume 3,000 cubic meters a year will grow LVL 1.8 - LVL 2. Whereas bills for residents who consume about 200 cubic meters a year will increase by 11.8-12 santimes a month.
According to Makaris, an average 1.5 percent increase as of July this year that the Public Services Regulatory Commission approved in 2003 has also been taken into account in the new petition.
After the tariffs are raised in Latvia, they will nevertheless remain the lowest in the European Union, stressed Makaris. The new tariffs will be similar to those in the other Baltic states, but the neighbor countries also plan on reconsidering the tariffs next year.
Liga Rimsevica, head of the Public Services Regulatory Commission's Public Relations Department, confirmed to LETA that a petition from LG had been received this morning.
In the coming weeks, LG plans on submitting another petition that will specify tariffs as of 2006.
According to LG, it will have to raise the tariffs because of increasing oil and gas prices in the world.
As reported, the regulator earlier rejected LG's petitions seeking permission to raise tariffs, qualifying the petitions as incongruous with normative documents.
LG had asked the regulator to permit a gradual increase in rates between 13.7-20.3 percent up to the year 2006.
LG justified its petitions by the fact that "Gazprom" raised gas supply tariffs by 16 percent as of January 1 this year. LG believes that gas supply tariffs for consumers should increase as much, so the company would have the necessary amounts of money for investments.
A hike in gas supply tariffs was also expected to prompt heat supply tariffs.
