Within the framework of the event "Lithuanian Days in Latvia", Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas and a Lithuanian delegation officially opened the Lithuanian goods and services fair "Lithuanian Export 2002" at Riga's Kipsala Center today.
Brazauskas explained that the idea of organizing "Lithuanian Days in Latvia" is about one year old and the goal is to share the "riches" of Lithuania with Latvians.
The Lithuanian president pointed out that Latvian and Lithuanian nations have always distinguished themselves with their work ethic, which is the reason for behind their survival and dramatic development.
Brazauskas praised Latvian-Lithuanian economic ties, which have developed quite dramatically recently.
Latvian Minister of Economy Aigars Kalvitis said that he is pleased to greet the largest representation of Lithuanian businessmen in Riga since restoration of independence. The minister emphasized that both countries are mutually important trade partners, noting that Lithuania is the second largest external trade partner for Latvia after Germany.
Kalvitis expressed hope that the fair would serve to establish closer ties between Latvia and Lithuania and the visit of a Latvian businessmen delegation to Vilnius would occur in response.
The opening ceremonies proceeded in cordial atmosphere with the participation of ex-President Guntis Ulmanis, Latvian and Lithuanian government officials. A film shot in a plane flying over Lithuania was shown at the ceremony.
