Livu Square to have new rest rooms, stage, cobblestone and benches after reconstruction

After the large-scale reconstruction of Livu Square in Riga's Old Town, it will include public rest rooms, and the square will be resurfaced with the new surface marking the course of the Ridzene River that ran through Old Town in the Middle Ages. New benches and a stage will be set up, or an area where a stage could be erected when necessary, and the square's greenery will also be restored. The number of summer cafes on the square will be curbed.

"Nobody liked the way Livu Square looked last summer," Andis Cinis, Riga Cultural Monument Protection Inspection's head, the initiator and coordinator of the reconstruction of square, told LETA.

Livu Square's fountain will not be restored during reconstruction. According to Cinis, a modern fountain is a "luxury", and no money was found for it this time. However, a fountain could be built in the square in the future.

The current fountain and pool will not be removed. The fountain will not operate, however, because it is obsolete and its operation is rather expensive, Cinis said. Therefore, the current fountain and the pool will be out of operation until a new pool is constructed.

As for the stage, either permanent or one that will be erected for specific events, it is not clear yet who will be its managers, Cinis said. Riga leaders are not ready to assume management of the stage, whereas prospective private managers might want to take out licenses for retail stalls, which in its turn is unacceptable to the organizers of the reconstruction of the square.

After the reconstruction, there will be less room for summer cafes, said architect Ausma Skujina, who is also participating in the reconstruction of the square.

There will be no more than five summer cafes at Livu Square this summer, LETA learned from the Riga City Council's Entrepreneurship Coordination Department. In 2002, there were seven summer cafes on the square.

The summer cafes will be placed along the square's perimeter, so that they do not hinder using the stage in the center of the square, said Skujina.

According to the reconstruction project, Meistaru Street's span between Kalku Street and Livu Square will be transformed into a pedestrian and cyclist path.

Due to limited funding, the course of the Ridzene River will be shown by concrete slabs of a contrasting color, presumably green.

The square's greenery will be restored, Cinis said.

Overall, reconstruction of Livu Square and Kalku Street will cost LVL 263,446, Riga City Council's Traffic Department told LETA. The reconstruction could conclude by May 16.
