Messe München preparing to launch Seismic Safety

New trade fair for earthquake resistance, fire protection and intelligent urbanization to celebrate premiere in Istanbul from April 28 – 29, 2014 Messe München International is getting ready to launch a new project: Seismic Safety, the International Trade Fair for Earthquake Resistance, Fire Protection and Intelligent Urbanization, celebrates its premiere in Istanbul from April 28 – 29, 2014. The Team from BAU, the World’s Leading Trade Fair for Architecture, Materials and Systems, is collaborating with MMI Eurasia, the Turkish subsidiary of Messe München International, to organize the event.

Seismic Safety’s venue is the WOW Convention Center Istanbul, which is located in the vicinity of the Ataturk International Airport and has 8,500 m2 of exhibition space. As part of a cooperation agreement between Messe München and "HINTE Messe", Intergeo Eurasia, the Congress and Trade Fair for Geodesy, Geoinformation and Land Management, will take place there at the same time as Seismic Safety. Intergeo focuses on measuring and testing systems as well as geoinformation concepts, so together with Seismic Safety, it forms the perfect symbiosis.

The range of exhibits at Seismic Safety covers the entire process chain for prevention in the fields of earthquake resistance and fire protection and includes comprehensive urban renewal concepts in that context. In particular, the exhibition portfolio consists of the following pillars:

•       Urban planning and concepts: Project development, interior fittings for public buildings, measuring techniques and processes
•       Safety: Fire protection and firefighting, early-warning systems, seismographs, seismic analysis equipment, universal design, parametric building
•       Earthquake engineering and building materials: Building components (windows, doors, gates, fittings) building materials (steel, aluminum glass, wood) machinery and techniques (renovation and dismantling), services
•       Fire protection and fire-resistant materials: Building components (windows, doors, gates, fittings) building materials (compound insulation, chemical building products) facades (glass, wood, aluminum, ceramics), building automation (drive and control systems).

Seismic Safety addresses the following visitor target groups:

•       Urban planners
•       Construction companies, construction engineers, architects
•       Project developers
•       Public institutions
•       Governments, ministries, authorities
•       Universities, educational and research organizations

Dr. Reinhard Pfeiffer, the Managing Director responsible for the fair, feels that collaboration between Seismic Safety and Intergeo Eurasia creates a unique range of exhibits: "Our concept for the fair is tailored to the special needs of the most rapidly growing market in Europe. Many regions in Turkey are extremely earthquake prone, which generates enormous demand for solutions related to the restoration of buildings and entire neighborhoods. As the organizer of BAU, the world’s largest trade fair for architecture, materials and systems, we can work together with our exhibitors to contribute a great deal of expertise and know-how."

Earthquakes happen quite frequently in Turkey. 70 percent of the population lives in earthquake regions that are classified as first and second-degree seismic zones. In the Gölcük earthquake on August 17, 1999 alone, more than 18,000 people were killed, nearly 1,000 of them in Istanbul. The eastern portion of the country is at particular risk, but in the past 30 years, western Turkey has also had several quakes with devastation and large numbers of victims.

Most buildings in Turkish cities cannot withstand a strong earthquake. According to some estimates, approximately 6.5 million apartments – or one-third of the country’s entire building stock – is in risky condition. That includes some 1.6 million apartments in Istanbul alone. For this reason, building safety in cities must be improved to reduce potential damage in the event of a natural disaster. The Turkish government’s objective is to renovate the most endangered buildings or replace them with new ones. Over the next 20 years, investments of some 400 billion US dollars have been earmarked for doing so, 100 billion of that in Istanbul alone.

Initially, organizers plan to hold Seismic Safety every two years. They expect approximately 150 exhibitors to participate in the premiere.

About BAU

BAU 2013, the World's Leading Trade Fair for Architecture, Materials, Systems, is the biggest and most important event in the sector. The last event took place from January 14 to 19, 2013 at Messe München exhibition center. Over 2,000 exhibitors from more than 40 countries and over 235,000 visitors from all around the world took part in the show.
On display at BAU on 180,000 square meters of exhibition space – taking up the entire site – are architectural solutions, materials and systems for commercial and residential construction and for interior fit-out, for both new-build and renovation and modernization. Every two years this event brings together market leaders from the sector to participate in a unique international display of competence spanning all the construction trades.
BAU is also the world´s largest trade fair for architects and construction engineers, attracting more than 60,000 design professionals. The exhibits at the fair are organized according to building material and also product and theme areas. Key topics for the future of the industry, such as sustainability and building for life, play an important role in all sections of the exhibition. The many attractive events in the supporting program, including high-caliber forums with experts from all over the world, round off this industry showcase.

The next BAU takes place from January 19 to 24, 2015 at the Messe München exhibition center.
