The company "Milgravis un Ko Ltd.", which opened Latvia's largest birch sawmill today, is counting on LVL 2.7 million in turnover this year.
During the opening ceremony, the company's director Pauls Abele said that the company expects no profit this year, but a large profit in 2003.
The joint-stock company "Latvijas finieris", the parent company of "Milgravis un Ko", plans on LVL 70 million in turnover this year. The company's president Juris Bikis said today that the estimate seems quite feasible. "Latvijas finieris" posted LVL 5.5 million in profit in the nine months of the year. Bikis believes 2002 has been a more stable year for the company than 2001.
90 percent of wood used by "Milgravis un Ko" are bought in Latvia, Abele said. Since the demand for birch products is growing, supply on the local market is insufficient, he said.
"Milgravis un Ko" has also launched designing and production of furniture. It had 110 employees at the beginning of the year, and now already 160.
Most of the company's products are exported to Scandinavian countries. The new sawmill's estimated capacity is 30,000 cubic meters of sawn timber a year, which must be achieved in two years.
