The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is going to move to its historic building at 3 Valdemara Street in one year. Presently, the Riga City Council is located there, LETA was told by the press secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rets Plesums.
According to Plesums, last week the foreign affairs ministry requested from the council a design plan of the building on Valdemara Street and other information on the building in order to prepare for renovations before it will be turned over to the ministry as of December 31 this year, said Plesums.
The building currently has been utilized by the Riga City Council according to an agreement between the Diplomatic Service Agency and the Riga City Council, which stipulates that the building is at the disposal of the city council until December 31, 2002 with an automatic extension until January 31, 2003.
A task force headed by deputy state secretary in the foreign ministry, Peteris Vaivars, has already launched drawing up a project on renovations meeting NATO safety standards.
At the end of last year, Vaivars sent a letter to the Riga council, reminding of the terms of the agreement, and the council replied that the deadline actually has been prolonged until January 31, 2003.
Plesums pointed out that the agreement would not be extended any longer because the ministry wants to move to its traditional premises.
