No new construction will be allowed in Riga's historic center until next spring, when a strategy for preserving Riga's historic center will be completed, Andris Ameriks, chairman of the Riga City Council's City Development Committee, said in an interview on Latvian State Radio today.
The draft strategy will be out this December. The full version will be ready next April or May, and until that time, construction companies can just forget about any construction activities in the historic center, said Ameriks.
Debate is under way now on the development of Livu Square, Bastejkalns Park, Town Hall Square and Alberta Square.
The above decision also means halting reconstruction of the Riga Bus Terminal, which is wrong, Ameriks added. The terminal building was built in the mid-1970s and it needs to be reconstructed. However, the building is within the UNESCO-designated Riga's historic center.
Ameriks believes that reconstruction of the bus terminal should be decided separately as an exception.
