In the past five years, the number of economically-active companies and enterprises in Latvia has increased by 7,700 or 20%, according to the report on regional development in 2004 drawn up by the Regional Development and Local Governments Ministry.
The report concludes that since 1999, the number of companies has grown by 28% in Riga, but in Zemgale - 9%, Vidzeme and Kurzeme - 7%, but in Latgale - 6%.
In 2003, overall 45,300 economically-active companies were registered in the state.
The report points to increasing regional differences among economically-active companies per 100 residents from year to year.
In 1999, for instance, the number of economically-active companies in Riga per 1,000 residents was 2.4 times more than in Latgale, but in 2003 - already 2.8 times up.
Business environment is more concentrated particularly in Riga region as proven by the fact of a major part of the European Union (EU) structural funding for their projects to the capital city, Minister of Regional Development and Local Governments Maris Kucinskis told reporters today. Among the future priorities, the minister mentioned the development of each and every Latvian region.
The regional development index was evaluated by the report, including a number of macroeconomic and social figures. In five years, the index has grown to Riga and Zemgale, but in other regions it has dropped.
