It is expected that the Cabinet of Ministers will be able to only allot LVL 51,000 out of the needed LVL 200,000 for conservation of fire-gutted Cesvaine Castle.
Juris Dambis, the head of the State Cultural Monument Protection Inspection, reported to the government today on the situation at the castle. The local government estimates that LVL 200,000 will be needed to preserve it, he said. The inspection has not yet received the estimate, however, which is why specialists cannot say yet whether the requested sum is justified.
According to Minister of Finance Valdis Dombrovskis, the Cesvaine City Council has also turned to the Ministry of Finance, and the ministry supports allotting LVL 51,000 for conservation of the castle from the budget's emergency funds.
The government did not adopt any ultimate decision today because the respective officials had not have a time to prepare the required documents. Allotting funds for restoration of the Cesvaine Castle from the national budget could only be considered after the situation with the national budget improves, Prime Minister Einars Repse said.
According to Dambis, restoration of the castle will require major funding, and restoration could take no less than one year. Meanwhile, one month is needed for conservation of the castle, including drawing up of required documents.
The Cesvaine City Council has requested the government allot LVL 25,000 for renewal of normal operations for the local high school, and LVL 200,000 a new roof for the castle.
As reported, the fire began early in the morning on December 5. The castle's attic and third floor were completely destroyed in the blaze, the second floor was partly damaged. The first floor was flooded with water used for putting out the blaze.
Cesvaine City Council initially said that the damage done to the building was estimated at LVL 2 million.
