The State Police have proposed opening a criminal case on breach of authority two days after the Prosecutor General's Office decided to send back the State Control's conclusion to the Ministry of Interior's on the eastern border renovation project for repeated review.
As LETA was told by Maija Celmina, press secretary for Minister of Interior Maris Gulbis, the criminal case was opened according to Criminal Law Article 317 Part 1.
Celmina pointed out that the criminal case has been initiated for the crime as such, not against specific officials.
The prosecutor from the Prosecutor General's Office sent back the evidence to the ministry since the office had no grounds to evaluate the documents because the conclusion from the State Control had not yet taken effect.
At the end of March, Gulbis decided to turn to the Prosecutor General's Office, requesting to evaluate the possible culpability of specific officials in the matter.
Gulbis said earlier that the prosecutors would be requested to evaluate the culpability of Ilga Kunicina the acting head of the Eastern Border Renovation Project Department and Interior Ministry Deputy State Secretary Viktors Elksnis.
On April 1, after becoming acquainted with a report on the situation with construction of facilities on Latvia's eastern border, the government decided to reconsider existing plans and break a number of contracts on design and construction of roads and facilities in the vicinity of the frontier.
