The government today heard a report on the situation with construction of facilities on Latvia's eastern border. Since April 1, when the Cabinet of Ministers ordered reevaluation of contracts with construction companies, negotiations have been conducted, as a result, the planned construction costs have been slashed by LVL 1.183 million, Interior Ministry's representatives said.
The costs could be reduced because an agreement was reached with construction companies about scaling projects down, and replacing construction materials with cheaper ones.
Repse asked representatives of the Interior Ministry whether an independent assessment had been conducted to determine whether the planned reduction of costs was acceptable to the government. He believes that the ministry's negotiations with construction companies have been "cowardly and indecisive", and that the ministry has done nothing since the beginning of April to solve the situation.
At Repse's request, the Cabinet today decided to postpone the review of the matter by one week.
The Interior Ministry intended to terminate contract with the joint-stock company "U.Pilena birojs", and to conclude new contracts with other 16 construction companies at the eastern border in order to slash costs.
