Proposals on preservation of Riga's historic center to be worked out

Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development Vladimirs Makarovs has assigned the Environment Protection and Regional Development Ministry^apostrofs;s Construction Department to work out proposals in one week for the government^apostrofs;s efforts in preserving Riga^apostrofs;s historic center.

Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development Vladimirs Makarovs has assigned the Environment Protection and Regional Development Ministry's Construction Department to work out proposals in one week for the government's efforts in preserving Riga's historic center.

The minister's press secretary Ilze Vinkele told LETA that specialists of the Construction Department must evaluate planned action for preserving the historic center and launch consultations with the Latvian Architects Union and State Monument Protection Inspection specialists in order to consider working out a special bill.

Makarovs believes that the Riga City Council's delays and unwillingness to tackle issues that concern preservation of Riga's historic center and its development, could have consequences that will irreversibly change the value of the historic center of Latvia's capital, that has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
