Renovations on all Riga's bridges are to be completed in four years, Ivars Zarumba, director of Riga City Council's Transport Department, told a press conference today.
According to Zarumba, if all bridges across the Daugava are renovated in coming years, Rigans will experience no more inconvenience caused by traffic jams for about 20 years.
The department's specialists said that three sections of the Salu (Island) Bridge were renovated last year, other sections of the bridge, constructed in 1976, would be renovated this year, renovation of the bridge's supports would begin in two years.
Renovation of the Akmens (Stone) Bridge has advanced the most - the job will be completed next year.
Work on Vansu (Suspension) Bridge will begin at the end of the month. It is planned that traffic will not be restricted in the downtown direction. Public transport, ambulances, fire engines and police will be able to use one lane in the direction of Pardaugava between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m., and all other vehicles between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m.
The above hours for the Vansu Bridge are subject to change, depending on intensity of traffic, Zarumba said.
As for renovation of streets in Riga this year, the amount of work will be twice as less compared to 2001, Riga City Council officials said. This means that there could be fewer traffic jams. Streets are to be repaired on weekends, when traffic in Riga is less intense.
