The object at Riga's most popular meeting place, the "Laima" clock, was unveiled today after another renovation.
The renovation of the clock took slightly more than one week. The clock's wiring was replaced as well as light bulbs, its metallic parts repainted and graphic design restored, as Uva Seglina, marketing manager at the joint-stock confectioneries "Laima" and "Staburadze", told LETA.
The clock is maintained on a regular basis, however, this was the first time since 1999 the clock's exterior was restored. The renovation cost LVL 2,000, and was paid for by "Laima" and carried out by "Metala dizains Ltd."
The clock was first erected in 1924 by proposal from Social Democrat Vecvagars, who was concerned that working people arrive to work on time. The clock was given its current name in 1936. In the 1950s, the clock again changed its look according to the Soviet style.
In 1999, "Laima" resumed patronage over the clock. It was completely reconstructed in 1999, its look from the 1930s was restored.
