Prime Minister Einars Repse and New Era (JL) today demanded Riga Mayor Gundars Bojars to submit explanations within three days on the violations permitted in the construction of the "Sun Stone" (Saules akmens) business complex in Riga^apostrofs;s Kipsala, and proposals for their recification.
Prime Minister Einars Repse and New Era (JL) today demanded Riga Mayor Gundars Bojars to submit explanations within three days on the violations permitted in the construction of the "Sun Stone" (Saules akmens) business complex in Riga's Kipsala, and proposals for their recification.
Repse told reporters today that if Riga City Council does not react to JL's demand, then "we will act and decide on firing certain officials or the entire council."
The premier reproached the Riga City Council, Construction Board and Culture Department as these institutions had failed to fulfill their duties. Repse stressed that in his view, Minister of Regional Development and Local Government Affairs Ivars Gaters (JL) has done everything possible therefore other institutions now have to react.
The construction company "Merks Ltd." has already raised two floors of the "Sun Stone" building and built a parking lot, as "Merks" Director General Ivars Geidans told LETA earlier.
Riga City Council adopted a decision at an extraordinary meeting last week to amend the Kipsala development planning strategy. The amendments are expected to legalize the construction of the "Sun Stone" complex.
"Sun Stone" is being built on a territory where, according to the current Riga development strategy, no construction is permitted. The Kipsala development strategy now stipulates that buildings no higher than 15 stories in height can be constructed there.
