Minister of Culture Helena Demakova today issued a decree on closing the Riga Dome Church to the public, as the building has become too dangerous to visitors.
During an inspection of the building, it was ascertained that the church's central pillar may collapse at any moment, Demakova said during the Cabinet of Ministers' meeting today.
After hearing Demakova's report, Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church Archbishop Janis Vanags said that alarm raised by church earlier about the poor condition of the Dome Church had not been vain.
Demakova adopted the decision after a meeting with French architect Bruno Deslandes, coordinator of technical inspections at the Dome Church, based on the results of latest geological studies, Demakova's press secretary Gunda Ignatane told LETA. The Dome Church will remain closed until the State Construction Inspectorate inspects the church's technical condition.
The critical situation ascertained by latest geological study requires immediate measures to be taken, before the State Construction Inspectorate's conclusions, said Ignatane.
Other experts who participated in inspecting the Dome Church also believe that it should be closed to the public now.
