At an extraordinary meeting today, the Riga City Council's City Development Committee decided to invite Mechtild Rossler, the chief of the UNESCO World Heritage Center in the European Region, to tomorrow's session of the committee in order to hear information on binding UNESCO legal enactments, which must be observed by the Riga municipality.
The committee also designated Vilnis Strams, the head of the Riga City Council's City Development Department, to prepare all documentation about construction of the "Saules akmens" (Sun Stone) business complex in Kipsala, and inform deputies about the matter.
Deputies initially also proposed inviting representatives from Regional Development and Local Governments Minister Ivars Gaters' office, as well as State Construction Inspection and State Cultural Monument Protection Inspection, but the proposal was rejected to avoid lengthy debate.
Riga City Council City Development Committee Chairman Andris Ameriks today convened the extraordinary meeting to review the issue of "Sun Stone".
Ameriks said previously that during his recent trip to Vilnius, he had met with UNESCO officials who had expressed their stance that UNESCO would never interfere in local disputes, and they had even condemned such moves on the part of international organizations.
