The Riga Historic Downtown Area Preservation and Development Council made a decision today to oppose the planned memorial to Latvian freedom fighter Konstantins Cakste being placed at the end of the linden-lined walkway in the center of Brivibas Street at Elizabetes Street.
The council's members explained that the walkway is a municipal landmark, that cannot be altered. The experts are categorically opposed to the felling of six linden trees, which were planted originally in 1860. Each tree is a "memorial", said council member, architect Janis Krastins.
Krastins used the phrase "classic unprofessionalism" to describe the layout and design for the Cakste memorial. He recommended another location - the Esplanade near Kalpaka Boulevard.
Sculptor Glebs Pantelejevs and architect Andris Veidemanis, creators of the planned memorial, pointed out to LETA that the location was already set before the design competition.
