Saeima approves amendments to Energy Law in principle
Saeima today approved in principle the government^apostrofs;s amendments to the Energy Law, and agreed that the amendments should be reviewed as urgent. The amendments stipulate deregulation of the electricity market.

The amendments envisage that the joint-stock power utility "Latvenergo" will not be privatized, all the company's shares will remain a property of the state.
The bill also says that the Plavinas, Kegums and Riga power plants on the Daugava River and the Riga 1st and 2nd cogeneration plants, the national grid and telecommunications networks and facilities will not be used as securities against loans or other liabilities, and will not be privatized.
According to the bill's authors, the Economy Ministry's experts, the Electricity Market Law will now regulate the sector. The law describes the duties and rights of the entities on the electric power market, safety of electricity supplies, requirements on quality, the system of distribution of electric power, and others.
