Saeima today passed in principle a new bill on the electricity market, and agreed that the bill would be reviewed as urgent.
The Economy Ministry that prepared the bill said none of the current regulations on the energy sector envisaged several important provisions for liberalization for the electricity market.
The new bill describes the legal framework for opening the electricity market, it has been prepared in accordance with the European Union's requirements.
The new law will introduce uniform regulations on the production, transmission, distribution and sale of electric power, and new regulations on organization and functions of the electricity market.
The Public Services Regulatory Commission approves of Saeima's decision to pass the Electricity Market Law, as the market will therefore be harmonized with the EU regulations and directives.
The new bill also describes all mechanisms necessary for the work of a free electricity market, and the procedure how consumers will select suppliers, Liga Rimsevica, head of the Public Services Regulatory Commission's Public Relations Department, told LETA.
