"Severstal" wants to expand operations in Latvia

Kruchinin told Slesers about "Severstal's" future plans for Latvia, stressing the wish to expand operations in Latvia because of the great prospects of the Latvian market, LETA learned from Slesers' office.
The company wants to receive a special quota of steel exports from Russia to the European Union after EU enlargement, in order to ensure successful planning of its future development. "Severstal" has already sent such a request to Latvia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which backs the initiative and is working on the respective petition to EU authorities.
Slesers also expressed support for the company's initiative, he said, expanding its operations in Latvia would promote both economic development and Latvian-Russian relations. "The more successful operations of such large and significant Russian companies as "Severstal" are in Latvia, the greater the probability that political relations between both countries will also improve," Slesers stressed.
A proposal was voiced at the meeting that a representative of "Severstal" could be included in the Latvian-Russian intergovernmental commission from the Russian side, which could help to make the commission's work in Russia more active.
"Severstal" is one of the world's biggest metal producers, the company's plants employ 120,000 workers worldwide.
