The design by Arup, Cox Group and Architects 61 features a major helix that makes about four complete turns along the 280m length and a minor one with about five turns.
Great precision was required in the fabrication and assembly. The 10.8m-diameter major helix spirals in the opposite direction to the 9.4m-diameter minor one. At its highest point, the major helix reaches 19.6m above water level.
All the steel tubes would measure 2,250m if laid end to end, according to the project's client, Singapore's Urban Redevelopment Authority.
The bridge uses a special duplex stainless steel, more usually employed in the chemical industry for transporting highly corrosive materials. It was chosen for its high tensile strength and its ability to withstand corrosion.
